Back in college, I was basically a ramen noodle CONNOISSEUR. We're talking 10 packs for a dollar, a tiny hot plate in the dorm room, and the very serious decision of which flavor to pick. Beef felt hearty. Chicken was a classic. But shrimp? Oh, shrimp was for when I wanted to feel FANCY!

The thing is - ramen noodle packs are still one of the best frugal food weapons you've got. At around $.50 a pack at Walmart, they're cheap, fast, and surprisingly versatile. And once you stop thinking of them as just "a cup of noodles," the possibilities get really fun.
Here are 10 ways to turn a humble little ramen pack into an actual dinner!
1. Classic Ramen Done RIGHT
Sometimes you just want the classic. But there are a few little tricks that make it SO much better. Use a little less water than the package says so the broth is richer and more concentrated. Add a soft boiled egg on top. Toss in a handful of baby spinach right before you serve it - it wilts perfectly in the hot broth.
Suddenly you've got something that feels like real food. Because it IS real food!
2. Ramen Stir Fry
Cook the noodles, drain them, and toss them in a hot pan with whatever vegetables you have hanging around. Frozen stir fry veggies work GREAT here. Add a little soy sauce, a tiny bit of sesame oil if you have it, and use half the flavor packet.
The noodles get a little crispy on the edges and it is SO good. This one is a regular weeknight dinner at my house!
3. Ramen Fried "Rice"
No rice? No problem. Cook your ramen, drain it well, and use it exactly like you would rice in a fried rice recipe. Scramble an egg in the pan, add some frozen peas and carrots, toss in the noodles, and season with soy sauce and the flavor packet.
It tastes amazing and uses up whatever is in the freezer. Budget dinner WIN!
4. Creamy Ramen
This one sounds weird but TRUST ME. While your ramen is cooking, add a tablespoon of cream cheese or a splash of milk to the broth. It turns into this rich, creamy, almost restaurant-style soup situation.
The chicken flavor pack works especially well for this one. It is cozy and filling and feels like a total splurge even though it costs almost nothing!
5. Egg Drop Ramen Soup
Get your ramen broth bubbling in the pot. While it's at a full boil, slowly drizzle in one beaten egg while stirring in a circle. The egg cooks instantly into those beautiful silky ribbons, just like at a Chinese restaurant.
It adds protein and makes the soup feel so much more substantial. My kids thought this was the coolest trick when they were little!

6. Peanut Butter Ramen Noodles
Okay hear me out. Mix together a spoonful of peanut butter, a little soy sauce, a tiny bit of honey, and a splash of hot water until it's smooth. Toss your cooked and drained ramen noodles in that sauce instead of using the flavor packet. Add some shredded cabbage or carrots if you have them.
This is basically a budget version of peanut noodles and it is DELICIOUS. The first time I made it I ate it three days in a row!
7. Ramen Taco Bowls
Brown some ground beef or chicken with taco seasoning. Cook your ramen noodles and drain them. Put the noodles in a bowl, pile the meat on top, and add whatever taco toppings you have - shredded cheese, sour cream, salsa, a little hot sauce.
Skip the flavor packet entirely here and let the taco seasoning do all the work. It is filling, flavorful, and seriously SO good for the price!
8. Baked Ramen Pizza Crust
This one is a little wild but in the best way. Cook your ramen, drain it, and mix it with one beaten egg. Press it into a flat circle on a greased baking sheet and bake at 375 degrees for about 10 minutes until it gets firm and a little golden.
Then add your pizza toppings and bake for another 10 minutes. It comes out crispy and fun and the kids will think you are an ABSOLUTE genius!
9. Crunchy Ramen Salad
Do NOT cook the noodles for this one. Crush the dry ramen up in the bag and toss it right on top of a simple green salad for the most satisfying crunch. The beef or chicken flavor packet can be mixed into your salad dressing for extra flavor.
Add some sunflower seeds, a little shredded cabbage, and a drizzle of olive oil and vinegar. This is a classic potluck dish that people go CRAZY for every single time.

10. Cheesy Ramen Casserole
Cook two or three packs of ramen and drain them. Mix with a can of cream of mushroom soup, a cup of shredded cheddar cheese, and whatever protein you have - canned chicken, ground beef, or even just more cheese!
Pour it all into a baking dish, top with more cheese, and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes until it's bubbly and golden. This feeds a family of four easily and costs just a few dollars total!
The Bottom Line on Ramen
At $.50 a pack at Walmart, ramen noodles are one of the most versatile ingredients in a frugal kitchen. Whether you're a college student with a hot plate or a mom trying to stretch the grocery budget, these little flavor-packed bricks of noodles can do SO much more than you think. Pick up a variety of flavors and start experimenting - you might just surprise yourself!
