13 Cheap Halloween Party Ideas That Feel Anything But Cheap

Halloween parties have gotten RIDICULOUS you guys. Pinterest boards full of $300 tablescapes and costumes that cost more than my first car payment. But here's the thing, some of the best Halloween parties I've ever been to (or thrown!) cost next to nothing. It's not about the spend, it's about the VIBE. Here are 13 cheap Halloween party ideas that feel anything but cheap!

Decorations That Look Expensive (But Aren't)

I am CONVINCED the buyer for Dollar Tree loves Halloween the best. Get in there early in the season, but keep checking back because they restock all through October!

DIY touches go a long way too. You know me, I love a good thrifted candle holder painted up in purple and black. For YEARS I had this thrifted vase thing that looked like a hollowed out tree, and I painted the whole thing grey with black accents. Nobody could tell it started as a $2 thrift store find.

Here's my cheap party trick though. Pick ONE splurge item and let everything else be cheap. I will clutch my pearls and admit I've paid over $100 at HomeGoods for a couple of special pieces (looking at you, pumpkin man with the long legs and the cute bell!) One showstopper plus a bunch of dollar store finds reads as "expensive party" every single time.

Setting The Mood Without Spending A Fortune

Halloween might be the ONE holiday that actually saves us money on electricity! Turn those overhead lights down low and switch on some fairy lights instead. You can even tint clear lights with alcohol inks if you want a custom glow. I love Tim Holtz inks for this because the colors have that perfect vintage feel!

Music matters more than you'd think too. There are Halloween playlists for everybody out there, and an 80s Halloween playlist makes me smile SO big every single time.

Now let's talk fog machines. Did you know they run around $70? That feels like a lot the first year. But if you're a big Halloween party person and you spread that cost over a few years of parties, it makes a whole lot of CENTS (see what I did there!)

Cheap Halloween Party Food Everyone Will Love

You don't need to cook anything fancy, you just need to RENAME what you already know how to make. Turn Rice Krispie treats into little ghosts. Dress up deviled eggs with a spooky Bloody Mary twist. Boom, spooky snacks, zero new skills required.

Want a food budget of basically nothing? Make it a potluck! If you've got good, responsible friends coming, let everyone bring a dish. Nobody minds, and honestly it usually means MORE food variety than if you tried to do it all yourself.

Whatever you make, make it ahead of time. You do not want to be babysitting a casserole the night of the party. You want to be getting into your DIY Halloween costume and looking fabulous when your guests walk in!

Easy Halloween Cocktails And Drinks For Adults

Skip trying to stock a full bar. Grab one or two good bottles of vodka and make a big batch witch's brew style cocktail instead. It feels special, it looks impressive in a big bowl or cauldron, and it costs a fraction of a full bar setup.

Don't forget a non-alcoholic option too! I don't fully understand it (haha) but SO many people are looking for a no-booze option these days, and honestly it's a bonus budget win for you.

And here's my last tip on this one. Don't try to make everyone happy with their exact favorite drink. If someone needs something special, they can bring it themselves!

Games That Cost Nothing But Keep The Party Going

Classic games with a Halloween twist are pure gold here. Think Pin the Spider on the Web, Pumpkin Bowling, or Pumpkin Cornhole. These cost almost nothing to set up and they keep people laughing and engaged all night.

Prizes don't need to be expensive either. Go sassy and fun instead of serious and pricey. A silly certificate or a dollar store trophy gets just as many laughs as something you spent real money on.

Small And Backyard Halloween Party Ideas

Here in Florida, October is finally cool enough to be outside, so we spread the whole party into the yard! If you're somewhere colder, a bonfire is a great way to stretch your party space AND keep everyone cozy at the same time.

A few backyard specifics that make a big difference. String some fairy lights along the patio. Use log rounds or hay bales for seating instead of renting chairs. It looks curated even though it's basically free.

And if the weather turns on you, don't panic! Spread the party into the garage. This is a great trick to keep in your back pocket, especially if you've got a small house like me.

DIY Decor Projects That Cost Almost Nothing

You KNOW I have a whole list of projects you can make with stuff from your craft room, Michaels clearance at 70% off, or thrift store finds. This is where being a little bit crafty really pays off around Halloween.

Don't be afraid to reuse supplies from other holidays either! I made a wicked cool Halloween banner using the BACK of a 4th of July decoration that I (say it with me) got on sale for 70% off at Michaels. Nobody ever knows.

Cheap Party Favors Guests Will Actually Keep

Being crafty is such a blessing around gift-giving time. If you want to send guests home with something, make it with your own two hands. That is worth SO much more than sending them home with dollar store junk they'll toss in a drawer.

If you'd rather buy something, look at Oriental Trading or Amazon for bulk options. You can find genuinely cute favors for pennies on the dollar when you buy in bulk.

Last Minute Ideas If You're Short On Time Or Money

Party sneaking up on you? Don't panic! A quick run to the dollar store can solve your decor problems in one trip, grab some black and orange everything and call it done.

For food, lean on that potluck trick again, or grab a couple bags of candy corn and Halloween Oreos and call your snack table finished. Nobody is grading you on effort here.

Most importantly, give yourself permission for "good enough." A Halloween party doesn't need to be Pinterest perfect to be a great time. It just needs good people and a little bit of spooky spirit.

It's About The People, Not The Price Tag

At the end of the day, nobody remembers if your fog machine was fancy or if your favors came from the dollar store. They remember laughing at Pumpkin Cornhole, sipping witch's brew out of a cauldron, and feeling like they were somewhere fun. That's it. That's the whole secret.

If you want more cozy frugal-living inspiration for your ears while you're crafting up all these Halloween decorations, check out Audible. It's my favorite way to get through a big DIY project without it feeling like work!
