My Mom was Cordon Bleu trained. She could debone a chicken and whip up a sauce that would make you weep. But her real holiday party magic trick? A dip.
Mom was a total dip nut, and our holiday parties were a bop. Our house filled up with people from every walk of life - college professors, single moms, neighbors, and everyone in between. Somehow it all worked. And there was always one dip on the table that pulled the whole crowd together, everybody hovering around it and oohing and aahing over her culinary creativity.

This Christmas Tree Taco Dip is so Mom-coded it hurts. It’s that classic cream cheese and sour cream taco dip we all grew up scooping at family parties, dressed up as a Christmas tree with cherry tomato ornaments, black olives, and a little cheddar star on top. No oven, no fuss, and 15 minutes from fridge to platter.
Set it out and watch your guests gather round. Mom would approve.
Why You’ll Love This Christmas Tree Taco Dip
- It’s a showstopper that’s secretly easy. It looks like you fussed, but it’s really just mixing, spreading, and sprinkling.
- No oven required. At Christmas your oven is busy with the ham. This cold appetizer stays out of the way.
- Pantry staples, holiday sparkle. Sour cream, cream cheese, and a packet of taco seasoning. That’s Sparkle Without the Splurge.
- It feeds a crowd. It serves 8 to 12, so it’s perfect for office parties, potlucks, and Christmas Eve.
- It’s a conversation starter. Just like Mom’s dips, it gets everyone gathered around the same platter.

How to Make Christmas Tree Taco Dip
Prep your toppings. Slice the cherry tomatoes in half and chop the lettuce.

Mix the cream cheese, sour cream, and taco seasoning in a large bowl with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy.

Shape the tree. On a large platter, spread the dip into a Christmas tree shape, including a little trunk at the bottom. For crisp edges, fill a piping bag with some of the dip, pipe the outline first, then fill it in with a spatula.

Sprinkle chopped lettuce over the tree, leaving the trunk bare. Then add the shredded cheddar the same way.

Decorate with ornaments. Arrange the tomato halves flat side down and the olive slices across the tree.

Cut a star from the thick cheddar slice with the mini star cookie cutter and place it at the top of the tree.

Serve with tortilla chips and enjoy!
Tara’s Tips
- Soften that cream cheese. Let it sit on the counter for 30 to 60 minutes so it blends smoothly without lumps.
- Make the base ahead. Spread the dip into the tree shape, cover it, and refrigerate it up to a day ahead. Add the lettuce, cheese, and ornaments right before the party so everything stays crisp.
- No piping bag? No problem. A zip-top bag with one corner snipped off works just as well. Bougie on a budget, baby.
- Buy a block for the star. Pre-sliced cheese is too thin for the cutter, so grab a small block of cheddar and cut a thick slice.
- Tara’s Take: If you have little helpers around for the holidays, ornament duty is the perfect job. Let them place the tomatoes and olives, and crown the tree with the star. Just count on a few “ornaments” disappearing before the tree is finished.
Serving Suggestions
- Classic tortilla chips or scoops, piled in a bowl next to the platter
- Celery sticks, bell pepper strips, or cucumber rounds for dippers
- Pair it with other holiday appetizers like these Christmas Tree Sandwiches
- Round out the spread with something sweet like these Peppermint Swirl Christmas Cupcakes
- Set it out on Christmas Eve while dinner cooks
Storage Notes
Keep the dip covered in the refrigerator until serving. Leftovers keep in the fridge, covered, for up to 2 days. The lettuce will soften over time, so this one is best on party day.
