The iconic scent of the Ritz Carlton hotel embodies refined elegance and coastal tranquility. Now, with just a few simple essential oils, you can recreate this signature fragrance right in your own home!
Why I Wrote This Post
I LOVE essential oils for aromatherapy and this Hotel Scent series is super fun to do! I have found 10 different hotel scents to make dupes for and my family is having fun checking out which ones we like best!
I live in Florida so I thought this “Ocean Breeze” scent blend would be right up my alley, but I have to admit that I liked the 1 Hotel in Miami scent better!
The Ritz Carlton dupe scent is nice, but there is nothing really “stand out” about it.
I used regular Jasmine essential oil rather than Jasmine absolute so there might have been a more floral scent with that, so if you are using Jasmine too, maybe use a whole bunch more of that one to get a WOW pop!
Ocean Breeze Essential Oil Blend
This is “perfect blend” if you have access to Sea Salt or Marine fragrance. I am trying all the different Hotels before buying expensive oils to use on the daily so I didn't get sea salt (substitutes below).
Bergamot Essential Oil: Known for its bright, citrus scent, bergamot adds a fresh, uplifting top note, embodying the “citrus kisses” aspect of the fragrance.
Jasmine Absolute: Jasmine brings a rich, floral note, capturing the “botanical” essence. It's deeply aromatic and can provide the heart note of this blend.
Sea Salt (or Marine) Essential Oil: While not a traditional essential oil, there are blends designed to mimic the fresh, clean scent of the ocean. If you cannot find a marine or sea salt essential oil, you might use a small amount of diluted seaweed or sea kelp extract as a base note to suggest that marine freshness.
Cypress or Cedarwood Essential Oil: To add a hint of woody depth, reminiscent of a yacht and the deep water, either cypress or cedarwood can serve as a base note, grounding the blend with a subtle, earthy aroma. (I used Cedarwood in my blend)
Substitute Essential Oils for Marine Note:
I used both Eucalyptus and Peppermint in my mix, it was a really refreshing and pretty scent with those, cedarwood, jasmine and bergamot combined!
- Eucalyptus Essential Oil: Known for its clear, penetrating freshness, eucalyptus can suggest a brisk ocean breeze. Its sharp, clean scent can stand in for the crispness of sea air, contributing to the overall refreshing quality of the blend.
- Peppermint Essential Oil: With its cool, invigorating scent, peppermint can add a refreshing, almost sparkling aspect to the blend, mimicking the lively spirit of ocean spray.
- Lemongrass Essential Oil: Lemongrass has a bright, citrusy profile with a hint of green, earthy depth. It can simulate the fresh, uplifting aspect of marine notes, adding a sunny, open-air quality to the blend.
Ritz Carlton Dupe Scent Recipe
We have a huge house and our diffuser sits in the space between our open kitchen and family room. This scent was not super bold so I had to increase, even above the stronger concentration amounts. If you have a smaller space I think either of these will be just fine!
Assuming you choose one of these substitutes for the marine note, here's how you might adjust the blend:
- Bergamot: 10 drops
- Jasmine Absolute: 7 drops
- Substitute for Marine (Eucalyptus, Peppermint, or Lemongrass): 5-6 drops, depending on your preference for freshness.
- Cypress or Cedarwood: 5-6 drops
Given that diffusers can handle stronger concentrations and you might prefer a more intense aroma in your room, you can use the same essential oils but in different proportions. Here’s a suggested starting point:
- Bergamot Essential Oil: 20 drops
- Jasmine: 10 drops
- Substitute for Marine Note (Eucalyptus, Peppermint, or Lemongrass): 10 drops
- Cypress or Cedarwood Essential Oil: 10 drops
Instructions for Use
In case this is your first run at a diffuser (watch out, you will be hooked and making your house smell amazing!)
- Prepare Your Diffuser: Fill your diffuser with water up to the recommended line.
- Add the Essential Oils: Drop the essential oils directly into the water. Use the amounts suggested above, or adjust according to your preference and the size of the room.
- Turn On Your Diffuser: Start your diffuser to begin dispersing the Ocean Breeze blend throughout your space.
- Adjust as Needed: Depending on the size of the room and desired scent strength, you may wish to adjust the number of drops. Larger rooms or a preference for a stronger scent might require slightly more of each oil.
Tips for Enjoying Your Blend
I KNOW, everyone wants a recipe to start with, but for sure make this your own. If you like a more earthy scent increase the Cedarwood, like more citrusy? increase the Bergamot!
- Experiment with Ratios: The beauty of creating your own blends is the ability to adjust the proportions to suit your personal preference. Feel free to play with the ratios to find your perfect balance.
- Day vs. Night Use: This blend is refreshing and uplifting, making it great for daytime use. For a more relaxing evening ambiance, you might increase the amount of cypress or cedarwood.
- Refresh Regularly: Essential oil scents can fade over several hours, so you may need to refresh the water and oils in your diffuser if you're using it throughout the day.
Creating your own “Ocean Breeze” diffuser blend allows you to bring the essence of a luxurious seaside escape into your home, offering a fresh, invigorating atmosphere that can lift your spirits and refresh your space.
