Some of my best childhood memories involve a red and white checked tablecloth stretched across my grandparents' picnic table, a yard full of cousins, and my Grandpa Rudy doing something that was probably not entirely legal with fireworks from his garage. (That garage. Y'all. OSHA would have had a field day!) It was small-town, patriotic, and absolutely perfect.

These Red, White, and Blue Fruit Skewers would have fit right into that spread. They're festive without being fussy, fresh without being fancy, and they come together so fast you'll have more time to supervise whoever in your family is currently handling the sparklers!
Why You'll Love This Recipe
These skewers are the easiest thing you'll bring to any 4th of July gathering - and somehow they always look like you tried really hard.
- No cooking required. It's 90 degrees outside. Nobody is turning on the oven.
- Kid-friendly and crowd-pleasing. Little hands love assembling these, and everyone grabs one off the platter.
- Naturally red, white, and blue. Strawberries, marshmallows, blueberries - the color scheme basically does itself.
- Light and fresh. A little breather between the potato salad and the potato chips.
- Totally scalable. Make 12 or make 120. The recipe grows with your guest list.
Ingredients
(Makes 12 skewers)
- Watermelon (enough to cut 12 stars from a ¼–½ inch thick slice)
- 12 blueberries
- 12 mini marshmallows
- 12 blackberries
- 6 strawberries, halved
Tools You'll Need
- Cutting board
- Sharp knife
- Star-shaped cookie or fruit cutter
- Food picks or short skewers
- Serving platter
Let's Make Them
Step 1: Cut your watermelon stars. Slice your watermelon into ¼ to ½ inch thick slabs. Press your star cutter firmly into the flesh and pop out your shapes. Try to keep them consistent in thickness so they sit nicely on the pick. Pro tip: pat them lightly with a paper towel so they're not too wet.

Step 2: Halve your strawberries. Slice each strawberry right down the middle. You want a flat edge so they sit at a slight angle on the skewer without sliding around.

Step 3: Assemble the skewers. Here's your order from bottom to top: 🍉 Watermelon star → 🫐 Blueberry → ⬜ Mini marshmallow → 🫐 Blackberry → 🍓 Strawberry half (angled slightly to fit)

Push each piece snugly onto the food pick. The strawberry half goes on last, angled just a bit so it sits prettily at the top.

Step 4: Arrange and serve. Fan them out on a platter. They look gorgeous standing up OR laid flat. Either way, someone at your party is going to photograph them. You're welcome.
Tara's Tips
- Star cutter size matters. A 2–2.5 inch star cutter works best for this. Too small and the watermelon falls apart; too big and it won't balance on the pick.
- Make a dipping sauce! Set out a little bowl of marshmallow fluff thinned with a splash of cream cheese or a simple sweetened whipped cream for dipping. It takes these from snack to experience.
- Prep ahead. Cut and refrigerate your fruit up to a few hours ahead. Assemble the skewers closer to serving time so the marshmallows stay fluffy and fresh.
- No star cutter? Cut small watermelon rectangles or triangles instead. Still festive, still delicious, still Grandpa Rudy approved. 😄
- Keep them cold. Set your platter over a tray of ice if you're serving outside in the summer heat.
Serving Ideas
- Set them out as a appetizer or dessert at your 4th of July cookout
- Arrange on a long rectangular platter for maximum patriotic impact
- Pair with lemonade, sparkling water, or a festive punch
- Add alongside other no-bake summer treats - check out my No-Bake Chocolate Chip Cheesecake and Confetti Dessert Dip for a full dessert spread that requires zero oven time!
Storage Notes
These are best assembled and served the same day. If you need to prep ahead, store the cut fruit separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator and assemble within a couple of hours of serving. Once assembled, they'll keep in the fridge for a few hours but the marshmallows will start to absorb moisture over time. Make them fresh when you can!
