What You'll Need To Make Your Own Bath Bombs

If you are a crunchy granola gal like me, you will only need to get a few extra simple ingredients!

  • ½ cup baking soda
  • ¼ cup citric acid
  • ¼ cup Epsom salts
  • 3 tablespoons pink kaolin clay (you can find this online or at a health food store – the natural coloring makes it pink!)
  • 1 tablespoon sweet almond oil
  • ½ tablespoon water
  • Bath bomb molds (I found these on Amazon)
  • Whisk
  • Small bowl
  • Jar with lid (optional, for mixing the oil and water)
  • OPTIONAL! If you do want a scent, you could add a few drops of essential oils… peppermint for zing or lavender for calm!

Let's Make Bath Bombs!

Don't freaked out… making this bath bomb mixture is super easy and is so much cheaper to make than it is to buy commercial bath bombs! My middle girl loves bath bombs and I was going broke buying her those expensive ones!

Combine the Dry Ingredients: In your smaller bowl, whisk together the baking soda, citric acid, Epsom salts, and pink kaolin clay. Make sure everything is well combined and there are no clumps.

Combine the Dry Ingredients

Mix the Wet Ingredients: You have two options here:

  • Easy: Measure the sweet almond oil and water into a small jar, close the lid tightly, and shake until well combined.
  • Advanced: Slowly drizzle the sweet almond oil into the water while whisking vigorously to create an emulsion.

Slowly Combine Wet and Dry: Now comes the fun part! Very slowly, add your wet mixture to the dry ingredients while continuously whisking. The goal is to avoid activating the fizz too early. You'll know you're getting the right consistency when the mixture starts to clump together easily.

Mold Your Bath Bombs: Overfill two halves of your bath bomb mold with the mixture. Press the halves together firmly and give them a quick twist.

Let Them Set: Leave your bath bombs in the molds for about an hour. Then, carefully unmold them and let them air dry overnight to harden completely.

Tips and Tricks

  • Kaolin Clay: This ingredient adds a pretty pink color, is gentle on skin, and helps your bath bombs hold their shape.
  • No Fragrance? No Problem! If you want to add a subtle scent, try a few drops of pure vanilla extract or a kid-friendly essential oil.
  • Get Creative: You can add a sprinkle of dried rose petals or a bit of natural food coloring to your mixture before molding for an extra special touch. You can also put little toys in the middle for your kid to find when they melt!
