Today we are going to be making two different sets of magazine collage paper dolls and backgrounds! Great tips and ideas for how use magazine collage images to create amazing characters to use in your magazine journal!
I have been doing magazine collage for years now and getting pretty darn good at it if I do say so myself! I love making cool journal pages that just make me smile!
In this video I will show you how I put together “paper dolls” which are your own character that you make with different pieces and parts of other magazine images and then talk about how to choose a background that will make them stand out!

Note: I make these as examples of my own unique projects, rather than step-by-step instructions because I KNOW you won't have the same images as I do! Find things that YOU love and put them together for countless hours of creative fun!
Things To Consider When You Are Putting Together Paper Dolls
When you are making a magazine collage, you want to figure out what you enjoy making and how you can incorporate you own signature styles into each project!
For example, I have some “standard practices” that I use when I make a magazine collage design…
- I like to use a darker color palette for the most part, while my pieces are fun, they aren't always pretty projects, they are more dark and broody
- Often I like to take their eyes and tip them down to make “sad eyes”
- Mostly I like to have super large heads and smaller bodies on my gals
- Last but not least, I LOVE to doodle on my collages or add words!
As you start doing more magazine collage for yourself, you will be able to start knowing what your own “rules” are which makes picking out and putting together images much more fun!
For example, you can see in this Jaguar Gal that her head is extremely large for her body and her bow is even bigger than her head!
I also showed some great ideas for how you could take existing magazine collage images and make them into something that works for your piece!
Here I used one of the existing arms, but then changed the other arm to work better for the design that I was making!
And lastly how to turn things that are not “normal” into cool things for your paper dolls! For example, the Jaguar Gal's body is a round sculpture and an ottoman.
Here you can see how I used an ice bucket and lampshade to make a hat for the scrunchy face lady! Using unique things makes for many pages of fun collage critters!
Making Magazine Collage and Layouts Wrapup
Hopefully you got some great inspiration for how you could take your magazine images and make new layouts!
Adding layers and building mixed media backgrounds that will be great places to put your paper dolls is all part of the process that is such a fun new adventure if you have never done this before!
One thing that people always ask me is “what is this for?” I am a creative person and making my own dolls (weird as they are) just makes me happy!
That said, I think I will soon be doing at at least a couple of them as wall art or tshirt designs just for me!

Dear Tara, I loved reading about your magazine collages! It is great fun to make art with magazine clippings. You said people ask you "what is this for?" My sister asks the question "what do you do with it when you are done?" I do it for myself, or sometimes gift it. I play around paper for the fun of it. Thanks for reading this. Roxanne
