What Are Sugar Scrubs
Sugar scrubs are easily the simplest way to get into adding essential oils to your bath time routine!
Functionally all you need is some kind of sugar (I like to mix regular granulated sugar with brow sugar), a carrier oil and then your favorite scent of essential oils!
You can use sugar scrubs to exfoliate any part of your body that needs a little extra scrubby attention… I tend to focus on my heels for self care, but also use it to get acrylic paint off my hands or blue hair dye off my skin when I have coloring “accidents”!
DIY sugar scrubs are also great for dry skin to help get rid of dead skin cells and exfoliate your skin!
Brown Sugar Scrub Ingredients
Alrighty then, let’s roll up our sleeves and dive into the world of sugar scrub making!
First you need some plain old granulated sugar. This not-too-coarse, not-too-fine sugar is going to be our main exfoliator. I like the fancy-pants version with added brown sugar, but in a pinch you could do with all white sugar.
Next add carrier oil to bind the sugar together; my go-to is sweet almond oil for its skin-loving benefits, but you can use any kind you have like olive oil, coconut oil or avocado oil.
And here comes the fun part – picking your favorite essential oil!
Choosing the Right Essential Oils
Alright, let's dive into the heart of this sugar scrub—the essential oils. I’m not just tossing in anything that smells good; I'm selecting oils that turn my scrub into a transformative experience.
Take lemon oil, for example; it’s like a burst of sunshine, invigorating and perfect for morning pick-me-ups.
Then there's peppermint, my go-to for a cooling, tingling sensation that’s downright refreshing after a long day.
Eucalyptus is another heavy hitter, a breath of fresh air that opens up my sinuses when I have a stuffy nose!
Last but not least is lavender… the perfect relaxer that calms my busy mind during evening wind-downs.
Picking the right essential oil is like crafting a mood; each drop fills the scrub with purpose.
How To Make A Sugar Scrub
Making a sugar scrub is SUPER easy… just mix it up and you are ready to go!
1. Get your sugars together: Start by mixing together the ½ cup of granulated sugar (plain old cane sugar) with the ¼ cup of brown sugar in a small bowl or mason jar. This concoction is the base for the “scrub” part!
2. Pour in the carrier oil: Next, take a ⅓ cup of carrier oil (sweet almond oil is my go-to for its nourishing properties) and blend it with the sugars until you've got a mixture that resembles wet sand at the beach.
3. Add 15 drops of essential oils: Now for the fun part! Drip 15 drops of your chosen essential oil into the mixture. Whether it's zesty lemon or calming lavender, this is where your scrub gets its great scent!
4. Mix to perfection: Stir everything together until it's thoroughly mixed. It will “set up” and become scrub like at this point!
Customizing Your Scrub Experience
Now, this is where we add a little sprinkle of ‘you' into the mix.
I'll let you in on a little secret – making your sugar scrub match your mood or the season is a treat for both the skin and the soul.
Think about it: a dash of peppermint oil can transform your shower into a wintery wonderland, while a hint of eucalyptus might just whisk you away to a summer spa retreat.
And, oh boy, when autumn rolls around, a cozy blend of cinnamon and orange essential oils? Divine!
It's all about striking that perfect balance – not too overpowering, but just enough to enliven your senses.
The personal touch is what takes your scrub from just another item on the shelf to your own private indulgence. Believe me, whether it's winding down after a long day or getting energized in the morning, your custom scrub can set the tone like nothing else.
So, go ahead, play around with those scents, find your ‘scrub signature', and let the shower become your sanctuary.
After all, isn't that the beauty of this DIY? You can just use regular old household sugar to make an amazing scrub!
